9 Azerbaijani Rights Activists in Iran Receive Prison Sentences


Several Azerbaijani rights activists were recently issued prison sentences for advocating cultural and linguistic rights for Iran’s Azerbaijani community. The Revolutionary Court of Tabriz has issued prison terms for activists Fardin Muradpour, Morteza Moradpour, Rasul Badali, Ali Badali, Arash Eshghi, Aminpasha Qarabaghi, Jalal Rajabzadeh, Alireza Farshi and Sima Didar, ranging from 6 months to 6 years.

On November 24, 2009, brothers Fardin and Morteza Muradapour were sentenced to 6 years and 3 years respectively, having been charged with “propaganda against the regime” and “threatening national security.” Fardin Moradpour was additionally charged with “possession of explosives” for having fireworks in his pocket at the time of arrest
